Water softener salt regenerates the ion exchange resin inside a softener. As hard water passes through the resin bed, calcium and magnesium ions are captured and sodium ions are released in their place. Once the resin is saturated, a concentrated brine solution flushes through it, strips the hardness off and recharges the bed with sodium.
Without a regular salt supply the resin stops exchanging, and hard water passes straight through to your pipes, boilers and appliances.
It depends on tank design and consumption rate, not on quality — all three are the same sodium chloride.
Tablets are hard-pressed and dissolve slowly and evenly, which suits most commercial and industrial brine tanks. They resist bridging and leave the least residue.
Pellets are smaller and dissolve faster, which works well for compact units and lower-volume systems.
Crystals are the most economical per tonne and are normally used in high-consumption plants that refill from 1000kg jumbo bags rather than by hand.

Purity determines how much insoluble material ends up sitting in your brine tank. At 99.9% sodium chloride, almost everything dissolves and the tank stays clean.
Lower-grade salt carries anhydrite and other insolubles that settle as sludge, block the brine injector and eventually mean someone has to shut the system down and shovel the tank out. On a hotel or hospital site that is an unplanned outage, so the cheaper salt usually costs more over a year than the purer grade.
10kg bags, 25kg bags and 1000kg jumbo bags. 25kg is the standard for commercial sites where staff refill by hand. 1000kg jumbo bags suit plants with forklift access and high consumption, and reduce both handling time and packaging waste.

As a rough guide, a softener consumes roughly 1.5 to 3 kg of salt for every 1,000 litres of water treated, depending on incoming hardness and how efficiently the unit is set.
To size an order properly we need three things: your softener capacity, your daily water throughput, and your regeneration frequency. Send us those and we will work out monthly consumption and propose a delivery schedule so you are not reordering in an emergency.
Not in a commercial system. Rock salt carries a high proportion of insoluble minerals that build up quickly in the brine tank and foul the injector. Table salt is usually iodised and often contains anti-caking agents, neither of which belongs in a resin bed.
Both will regenerate resin in the short term, but the maintenance cost and the risk of an unplanned shutdown make them a false economy on any site of scale.
Two different problems with different causes.
Sludge at the bottom is undissolved insoluble material, which points to low-purity salt. Switching to a high-purity grade stops it accumulating further, though the existing deposit still has to be cleaned out once.
A hard crust or bridge is a solid layer of salt that forms above the water line, leaving a gap underneath. The tank looks full but no brine is actually being made, so the softener runs without regenerating and hard water starts passing through. It is usually caused by humidity, by overfilling the tank, or by fine-grained salt in a tank designed for tablets. Break the bridge carefully with a broom handle and switch to a hard-pressed tablet grade.
Softening exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium, so softened water carries more sodium than the supply it came from. The amount depends on how hard the incoming water was — the harder the source, the more sodium is added.
For most people this is not a concern, but anyone on a sodium-restricted diet should check with their doctor, and many sites keep one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking. If your application needs both, we can advise on how the system is normally configured.
